Located within the Finnish state's border zone in Vartius, near the Russian border, it is said to flow both toward the Gulf of Bothnia and the White Sea. The spring bubbles up along the historical Bread Road, once traveled by Viena Karelian pack merchants journeying to Finland and by Karelianists — Finnish national romantic artists who travelled to Karelia in search of “the original Finnish culture." Through novel excerpts, oral tradition, archival materials, a museum exhibition, and personal memory, Kultalähe becomes a site where overlapping histories, myths, and images of Karelia intersect in a fragmentary collage.Kultalähe has been exhibited in group exhibition Waterways at Lappeenranta Art Museum (2026), and screened at&nbsp;Finno-Ugric Film Festival (2026). The painting is based on the Finnish national epic Kalevala (1835)&nbsp;and is an index of how Karelian culture was incorporated into the construction of Finnishness.Moving between Ul’l’aška’s home village Rimminkylä and the Finnish National Gallery’s Ateneum Art Museum, the film brings the painting into relation with uncanny family album photographs, archival materials, an overwritten interview, and personal memories. It reflects on how we manage our fellow species using technology. Combining experimental theatre, dance and installation, the performance takes the audience on an exploration into an imaginary reality that layers the temporalities of the past, present and future. In the mystical reality of the performance, bodily spaces open up from personal views towards global dimensions.
