Mikki Noroila, Timon Mikki

Mikki Noroila (they/them) works between moving image and sound. Noroila's recent works draw on their Viena Karelian family histories to explore the legacy of Karelianism — a Finnish national romantic movement that imagined Karelia as the source of "the original Finnish culture."

Kultalähe (2026)

Digital video. 17’20 minutes. Stereo. Color. Original languages: Karelian & Finnish. Subtitles: English, Karelian & Finnish.

The film follows a docufictional journey to Kultalähe (Golden Spring), a spring in the western borderlands of Viena Karelia. Located within the Finnish state's border zone near the Russian border, it is said to flow both toward the Gulf of Bothnia and the White Sea. The spring bubbles up along the historical Bread Road, once traveled by Viena Karelian pack merchants heading to Finland and by Karelianists — Finnish national romantic artists heading to Karelia in search of “the original Finnish culture." Through novel excerpts, oral tradition, archival materials, a museum exhibition, and personal memory, Kultalähe becomes a site where overlapping histories, myths, and images of Karelia intersect in a fragmentary collage.

Kultalähe has been exhibited in group exhibition Waterways at Lappeenranta Art Museum (2026).
